Self Learning

This morning Judah pointed out a mole on my big toe I had never seen before because I can't see it without contorting my foot. That is not one of the things I expected to learn about myself by having kids.

Good Catch Ed

Ed Morrissey points out that Obama's is responsible for the very thing he accused George Bush of only in a shorter amount of time.

I also find it insincere when the Tea Party is blamed for anything regarding the budget deficit when they had no power when massive spending increases occurred under a Democrat controlled legislative and executive branches. What ever happened to the "pay as you go" plan proposed by then candidate Barack Obama. Even if his own party was the downfall of the plan (though he never stuck to his guns when signing bills) how is this the tea parties fault? They simply want to cut federal spending, and somehow after winning elections they are expected to abandon their promises to enable a conflicting ideology in government they were sent to oppose.

Three Myths about Capitalism

Myth 1. Being pro Capitalism means being pro big business.
Myth 2. Capitalism generates and unfair distribution of income.
Myth 3. Capitalism was responsible for the recent financial crisis and the recession.

Singular "They"

To be consistent, those who object to the use of the singular "they" should refrain from using the singular "you" as well.

Second Word

She has been starting to sign lately too, though she doesn't always do it at the right times. Exciting!

Children and Work

Everyone sits quietly at their desks, thinking and thinking, just when they’d rather be out tending cows or weeding the garden.
Certain homeschooling styles would be the exception. I do wonder in what ways I can include my son in my tasks around the house. We are not farmers, so there remains anything I do with my tools. The problem is that tools can be very destructive, esp. in the hands of a three-year-old. But he wants more than anything to use the tools. Sometimes I let him bring tools to me, and I gave him his own ratchet screw driver to attempt driving in screws on occasion. "When you're older" seems to be an acceptable reason for rejecting his every request to handle my tools.

Piper on Holy

On I Corinthians 7:13-14
Perhaps it refers to the “sanctity” of lawful marriage and legitimate children. The marriage is still lawful (though one is an unbeliever), and the children are legitimate (though born of this mixed union). The “sanctity” (holiness) of marriage and birth are not compromised.
Corraborotion...
Then Jewett, shows from Jewish sources like the Mishna, that the Hebrew stem for holiness (kadash) is used in just this way at least ten times, signifying the setting apart of a woman to be a man’s wife. “A man ‘sanctifies,' that is, espouses, a wife by himself or by his messenger”.

Comparison Between Grades and Income

Of course grades have a cap of 4.0. Income does not. But why shouldn't someone determine that your 4.0 is excessive, based on privilage and that others have a right to your accomplishments?

Wilson on Trump

...when the respectability police shut down intelligent discussion of hot issues, they only succeed in getting fruitcake discussion of them. Take a page from the gun rights advocates. When controversial opinions are outlawed, only outlaws will have controversial opinions.

Book Review: Birth of Britian

History of the English Speaking Peoples: Birth of Britian Vol 1History of the English Speaking Peoples: Birth of Britian Vol 1 by Winston S. Churchill

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

On a scale of 1 - 5

Clarity/Consistency 2 - I found myself getting confused numerous times because on numerous occasions rather than outright say things, he would make the reader read between the lines, or put things in terms that did not make sense to me. Overall structure was mostly but not totally sequential.

Rationality 5 - I found no fallacies.

Creativity 4 - He makes the reader read between the lines, which was quite witty at times (when it made sense to me).

Narrative 4 - There was a fair amount of balance by telling stories when interesting enough.

Paradigm Shift 3 - I did learn a lot and gained a much better understanding of the middle ages in regard to political conflict and the function of the monarchy as it existed in England.

Emotion 4 - Was not the most emotional book, but Churchill does definitely praises some kings and historical events more than others and draws the reader into that admiration or disapproval.

Book Review: The Bourne Identity

The Bourne Identity (Jason Bourne, #1)The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Clarity/Consistency 4 - The confused states of Jason were appropriate to the story but led to confusing narrative at times.

Rationality 5 - No noticed contradictions.

Creativity 4 - Jason learning about his past as a means of driving the plot was creative, especially since there were many layers of identity. Also, I found some of the problem solving interesting.

Narrative 3 - I had no problems with the amount of narrative, but some of the character development did not seem believeable.

Paradigm Shift 1 - Did not shape the way I think about the world to any degree.

Emotion 4 - Definitely felt the anguish of some of the sticky situations they got themselves into. Did not find the love relationship believable.

Tree Down

Finally, the tree that has vexed us for four years has been taken down (not by me).

This spring I will work on removing the tall stump.
